Research: Sound

What is the importance of sound?

In many different sorts of media products, such as movies, television shows, commercials, music videos, computer games, and so on, layers of sound convey mood, tone, and story. Since sound and silence both contribute to the meaning of a visual image, their relationship to it is crucial.

What are the different types of sound?

There are four different types of sound namely music, sound and audio effects, dialogue, and silence. The effects these different types of sounds have on the audience are as follows, music heightens emotions or actions and at the same time breaks the silence in the absence of dialogue. Secondly, sound and audio effects help aid the action scene by adding a sense of realism. Thirdly, dialogue transmits the story information to progress the narrative. Additionally, dialogue conveys the message of the film to the audience. Furthermore, silence is used to create tension along with drawing attention to the visual images.

Different types of sounds in the movie "It"?

Non-Diegetic:

An example of non-diegetic sound in the opening sequence of "It" can be heard when the clown, Penny Wise, is having a conversation with Georgie, and Horror choir music can be heard playing in the background. This is clearly a non-diegetic sound as the scene is taking place in a suburban neighborhood on a heavily rainy day. This emphasizes the non-diegetic sound effect because on a normal rainy day choir music would not be playing in the background. Since none of these sounds are a part of the story's world and are not audible to the scene's characters, they are all non-diegetic.

Diegetic:

The sound of rain falling can be heard by the characters in the scene as the opening sequence of the movie "It" begins. The conversation of Georgie, the younger brother of the main character Bill, is also a diegetic sound when he speaks on screen. A further illustration of a diegetic sound is the sound of water flowing, which can be heard when Georgie's paper boat drifts down the street and into a storm drain. Pennywise's voice: Pennywise the clown's language, when he speaks to Georgie in the storm drain, is also a diegetic sound. Another example of a diegetic sound is the sound of a car passing by in the distance as the scene develops. Because they are all heard by the characters in the scene and are a part of the story's reality, all of these noises are diegetic.
