Research Analyse Opening Scenes
Mise-en-scene
As Rear Window begins, the first scene that appears is the apartment buildings that are beautifully decorated with flowers. These flowers add to the aesthetic beauty of the surrounding atmosphere creating a mood of calmness and tranquility for the audience.
To add humor, the cast of the leg of the protagonist has been imprinted with "here lies the broken bones of L.B Jefferies" and this helps to remove any tension the audience may have felt and at the same time create some sort of suspense as no one would know how the leg of the character broke, adding intrigue to the character.
Moreover, besides the broken leg, a broken camera is also witnessed on a table. This can be interpreted as both situations being related to each other. Firstly, how the leg broke, and secondly how the camera gets damaged in this scene.
Sound
The use of non-diegetic music in the first few seconds of the scene clearly indicates in which time period the movie takes place. However, in the beginning, the music can be referred to as wild but eventually becomes calmer showing the different moods and feelings of the different people listening to it.
Additionally, to prove that the movie is based on realism certain scenes show people shouting in the background as the camera moves from one apartment to another, all of this giving a naturalistic feel.
Editing
The use of saturated colors and a grainy effect throughout the opening scene of the movie helps to maintain a peaceful ambiance, one that seems like an older period of time giving a retro and nostalgic feel. the saturated colors add to the mood of the audience and help to uplift it.
The use of transitions from one clip to another clearly indicates the start of the day and how it sets the routine for the citizens and at the same time gives out a naturalistic as well as a resonating feel when people are seen getting ready to go to work.
Representation
Representation is used in the opening sequence to showcase different groups of people and how they start their day, depending on their individual circumstances. Evidence for this can be seen when a couple woke in a grumpy and unmotivated state of mind just because their mattress was on the floor. On the other hand, a lady has woken up cheerfully, making herself some breakfast excitedly. One reason for this could be that when people live alone, they tend to be more organized and enjoy doing simple tasks whereas, on the other hand, one person does not have to rely on another person to be happy on well organized.
Furthermore, in the opening sequence, the women have been sexualized as they are shown wearing only undergarments and seeking attention by acting provocatively. Compertiviley, the men are shown to be sober and wearing normal pajamas without any hint of being sexualized.
