Research: Codes and conventions of an opening scene

Purpose of an opening sequence?

The purpose of an opening sequence serves to give a presentation about the title of the film along with the cast and crew of the film or the episode's upcoming tone. Furthermore, this is a way for producers to hook the audience to keep watching further. By including audio and visual effects, it further engages the audience to keep watching.

Explore the conventions of an opening sequence.

A few of the conventions of an opening sequence can be the title of the film, the name of the production house, the genre of the film, the introduction of characters, and the set location. A production house works on creating content, writing the dialogues, and setting up the locations for the shoot. This is often done for social media companies, television, and films. The genre of the film gives an insight to the audience as to what to expect from the film or episode they are about to watch.

What is Roland Barthes' Enigma codes theory?

Roland Barthes' Engima code theory explains that in a movie or television episode there is always some text that gives a mysterious outlook to the audience watching it. This mystery hooks the audience to the film or episode that gives them a feeling of being a part of it. An example of an enigma code can be seen in the opening sequence of the show Breaking bad when the main protagonist, Walter White, opens the scene driving a campervan at high speed clearly trying to escape from something. This can be seen as an attention-grabbing scene. Walter then proceeds to crash and pull out a gun on what seems to be upcoming law enforcement. The following scene cuts off leaving the audience in a state of enigma as to what will come next.

Own planning of an opening sequence.

From prior evidence, it is clearly evident that an audience would be attracted to firstly, the title of the film as that would establish the setting and period of time is taking place in. For example, a movie like Avatar suggests from the title that this film seems futuristic and from a different time, this gives people the certainty of knowing what to expect from the movie. In addition, knowing the genre of the movie prepares the audience for the tone of the movie. For example, thrill seekers would seek horror whereas conventional couples would seek romance in a movie.
